I grew up in a small, but dense town, Hasbrouck Heights in Northern New Jersey about 20 miles from NYC. In the late 18th and early 19th century Italian and Sicilian immigrants populated North Jersey so much so that I was advised against dating anyone in the neighboring towns at the risk of being related to them while I was in high school. Those early Italians brought their culture of food that still very much can be found throughout the area. I might be biased but the average pizza slice in North Jersey is better than anywhere else in the country. Italian food wasn't called Italian where I grew up, it was just called food.
